Acid Reflux Damage
If, over a period of time, the acid reflux is left untreated, the liquid can inflame and damage the lining of the esophagus, or worse, cause esophageal cancer. On that note, the acid moving up into the esophagus, irritating the lining causes the fiery sensation in the chest. Unfortunately, Acid reflux is a very harmful and chronic condition that must be treated indefinitely, as stopping treatment would most certainly bring back the acid reflux and in turn bring back the irritation, heartburn, and acid reflux damage. If not treated, the damage may be irreversible.
It is common to think that just because one has had heartburn that one must have acid reflux. Over the counter medicine can usually cure simple heartburn quickly as long as you lay off the spicy foods; it's better to know your own tolerance of such foods. There really shouldn't be too big of a problem unless the heartburn is persistent and showing up two or more times in a week, if this is the case then acid reflux may have developed. Controlling Acid Reflux Symptoms
Those who are experiencing symptoms from acid reflux should know that they need to make some lifestyle changes. Simply eating different foods can do this. After eating, the body helps facilitate digestion by producing acids and enzymes to help break down the food. A good tip is to avoid eating before you lay down for bed. A better tip for those whom suffer from acid reflux would be to try to not lie down for two to three hours after eating. Follow these simple tips for bedtime and for daytime napping.
The acid your body produces is directly proportional to the amount of food you eat, so eating smaller meals will create less acid, and therefore help control acid reflux. Instead of eating a few big meals throughout the day, try eating many smaller meals. This can aid your symptoms of acid reflux and also aid in weight loss. Try to eat less fatty foods. The less caffeine in your system, the better so limit your intake of coffees, colas, and chocolates to really help stem reflux. Tomatoes and other spicy foods should be avoided. Also, a good way to avoid acid is to not eat acid! Avoid citrus fruits, such as oranges and grapefruit, which are high in acid content.
Products such as tobacco and alcohol should be avoided. A drink every once in awhile should not hurt, but excessive drinking or drinking on a regular basis can seriously increase acid reflux symptoms. You should raise the head of your bed if at all possible. This is helpful because gravity is on your side in helping the acid reflux stay down. Practice good posture; it helps keep symptoms of acid reflux at bay, and also has been shown to prevent muscle pain.
